England Handball

When England Handball told us they liked our Coaching Edge magazine so much, we offered to create a bespoke version for them.

Pass it On! was born soon after as we combined the best of our in-house publication with some unique content created exclusively for handball coaches, to produce the governing body’s official coaching magazine.

Background

Following initial discussions, we suggested Pass it On! as a title for this brand-new digital publication, and we then set about creating a series of visual concepts that would appeal to their target audience.

Having settled on a preferred design, our in-house magazine editor then worked closely with the client on the content of issue one, to ensure it would hit the back of the net.

Some of the content was brand new and exclusive to handball, as our team of journalists followed up with contacts and contributors to produce bespoke stories and features. Meanwhile, we syndicated some best-practice coaching advice previously published in Coaching Edge, making sure it was carefully and sympathetically repackaged and repurposed for use in a very different magazine.

The next step was for our design team to take possession of the project and start bringing together what has become one of our all-time favourite projects.

Solution

Issue one hit the digital news-stand in September 2013. To judge its success, we were recently commissioned by England Handball to produce another four issues.

Using a growing Twitter community as the primary source of distribution, 10,060 unique hits were recorded covering the four issues published between September 2013-June 2014.

Our in-depth analytics show that, in terms of UK traffic, London, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Derby, Middlesbrough, Stockport and Loughborough have been particular hotbeds of interest as this cost-effective digital magazine continues to spread the word about the innovative work being carried out by handball coaches across England.

Coaching best practice, skills and drills, informal continuing personal development (CPD) and inspirational interview features have all contributed to produce a winning magazine that has helped the client raise the profile of their exciting and growing sport.
